Fallen down upon your knees, and tasted your share of earth.” When was the last time you heard silence? Total and utter silence not only in your surroundings but also within. That stuff is hard to come by these days. And for the past 200 years, since the beginning of the industrial revolution, it' just become harder and harder, every day. For the past two centuries we have manifested our victory in the battle against nature by surrounding ourselves with more and more machines. Devices doing our jobs, getting us around effortlessly. So I decided to use the sky as their backdrop. Taksim Square is filled with people walking in all directions, busily going about their day. They're usually lost in thought and I find you see a wide variety of "characters" here, which I wanted to bring out individually. With the constant crowds, chaos and movement here, that's not so easy. So I used the sky, lighting, and composition to showcase these individuals candidly, with style. All photos were shot completely candid using only the natural sunlight. There was no "shooting from the hip." When someone caught my eye in the right light, I quickly kneeled down and made the shot as they walked by, composing similarly to put focus on both the "character" and the sky. ![]() |
